Climate Change is real. Urgent action is necessary.

The Big Ask brings together 18 countries all with the same big ask -
That their governments commit to reduce carbon emissions, year on year. Every year.

 

These binding targets will encourage climate solutions that will help us all - individuals, business and communities - to cut our carbon footprint.


Our Big Ask is that EU member states make legally binding commitments to cut emissions year-on-year. These cuts should be equal to a 40% reduction of EU-wide domestic emissions by 2020 and 100% by 2050.

 

We also demand that European countries provide their fair share of the finances needed for developing countries to tackle climate change and to adapt to its consequences.

 

Who is involved in The Big Ask?

Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, EWNI (England, Wales and Northern Ireland), Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Malta, the Netherlands, Scotland, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.

 

What is happening?

The Big Ask is engaging hundreds of thousands of people, right now,  across Europe. It's about  empowering the general public to take action and to realise they CAN influence decisions taken by both national government and the European Union.

 

Take a look at The European Big Ask Launch in Brussels in February 2008, with Radiohead's frontman Thom Yorke.

Friends of the Earth groups are organising concerts, exhibitions, and all sort of public activities. They're helping people to visit their MPs and to sign petitions and postcards showing their support for The Big Ask.  And they're working with celebrities and bands who support The Big Ask  to get the message out there.

What started this European wide Big Ask?

We're building on the success in the UK. At the end of 2008 the UK made history by being the first country in the world to have a climate change law with legally binding targets for reducing carbon dioxide emissions. The law will support climate solutions that will help us all - individuals, business and communities - to cut our carbon footprint.

 

Such ground-breaking legislation really is a cause for celebration.

The success of the Big Ask campaign means the UK now has a law which counts ALL emissions from the start and commits it to carbon dioxide reductions of 80 per cent by 2050 in line with the latest science.
